Defining WpVote.com rules: advices wanted!
Posted by jbj on Aug 14, 2008 in Blogging, wordpress • 19 commentsSome days ago, we launched wpvote.com, the social bookmarking site for Wordpress fanatics. Since this day, many Wordpress lovers joined and daily share their best links about the blog engine. As the average submitted links per day quickly grows, I think that WpVote needs simple and basic rules in order to make the site better for everyone. Your advice is welcome!
When I launched WpVote, I didn't expect that so much users will join on the firsts days. Even if this is very great, it also appeared that WpVote needs some rules (or TOS).
For exemple, someone published an affiliate link, some people posted links in Gerlan or French, and so on.
I think that in a communinity as such as WpVote.com, decisions have to be made in a democratic manner, and this is why I ask every WpVote user to give me advices about the future TOS of the website.
Here's already some proposals:
A - Affiliate links
- 1 - Affiliate links should be treated as spam
- 2 - No problem with affiliate links if the content stays relevant
B - Non-Wordpress content
- 1 - Non-Wordpress content should not be allowed on a Wordpress-specific site.
- 2 - Non Wordpress content is ok as long as it stays relevant to blogging (blogging tips, SEO, web design...)
C - Submitted links language
- 1 - All languages should be allowed.
- 2 - It's better if all is English.
- 3 - Non-English links should be allowed if translated (Specific plugin, google Translation)
D - Anonymous voting
- 1 - Anonymous voting is a bad thing, as someone could then vote more than once for the same item.
- 2 - Anonymous voting is ok.
E - Spams submissions
- 1 - Spam links must be deleted as well as the user who submitted it.
- 2 - Spam links must be deleted as well as the user who submitted it and the url blocked.
- 3 - Spammers must be warned the first time, then deleted.
Here's my own answers to the previous questions:
- A:1
- B:N/A
- C:N/A
- D:1
- E:1
Anything else you'd like to be discussed? Any advice is welcome, so feel free to participate and help the WpVote TOS creation

I think WpVote should remain a WordPress only site as there are other places for other blogging resources.
Thanks for sharing your ideas!
for me just the same as K-IntheHouse
WpVote is no dobtly is a nice concept.and i think the rule are also perfect.really nice ideas.
I say 1, 2, 1, 1, 1. I think that it all depends on your personal preference. It would be nice to be the “go to” place for all things WP-related, but then again you may even get more love for being a “strictly WP” based website. I am definitely keeping my eye on the site, though!
Thanks for your advice. Glad to see WpVote users providing ideas for making the site a better place for everyone!
One little thing, I’m using IE7 and the top menu is cut off. I don’t know if I can use HTML in this comment but here goes …
See the image at http://mothertheme.com/SS302.gif for what I see … Thanks!
Thanks Tim for telling me about this! I use Mac & Linux so I don’t have any IE, exepted at work. This will be easy to fix I guess, so you can expect to have it working in a few hours. Thanks again!
I don’t think affiliate links should be allowed at all. Non-WP content should be okay as long as it is relevant to blogging somehow. I’m a little torn on the language question since WordPress has an international community where lots of languages are spoken. Definitely no anonymous voting, registration should be required to vote. There should be a strict spam policy, although I think users should be warned first before getting deleted.

Anyway, I’m a new comer to WP Vote and I have liked what I see so far though I haven’t been a power user myself but it’s just a matter of time, as long as proper moderation is in place.

Oh ya, I have added your blog to my PR list as per your request.

Thanks for your advice, Yan!
You don’t have to be afraid about moderation: I always keep an eye on WpVote and any unapropried links are deleted.
Now, I think I can create the definitives rules within the week. Stay tuned
I really love the site, it’s a great idea and I think it will do very well.
